WHAT TO WEAR

Wondering how to dress your family for your next portrait session? Follow these helpful tips and allow your family’s personality to shine!

Individuals
I recommend wearing bold and solid colors with a lot of texture to show off personality.  This is an opportunity for your style to shine.  For children, bright colors are always best.  I also recommend wearing layers as much as possible to add interest and texture.  For example, clothing with texture such as chunky sweaters, clothing with ruffles, buttons, ribbon, embroidery, etc.

Siblings
It can be difficult to coordinate colors and not look too matchy.  And you don’t have to fall back on the easy combinations of black, white or khaki — don’t be afraid to think outside of the box.  Choose something that matches their personalities: modern and funky, colorful and fun, conservative and classic.  Don’t be afraid of color or pattern.  I recommend choosing one item of clothing that is full of color and pattern and have the other items coordinate with it.  But do try to avoid logos or cartoon characters.  And don’t forget to coordinate shoes!  Yes, their feet will be in the photograph.

Families
Choose a style you like and a few colors you like as well.  I recommend having the parents dress fashionable, yet simple and focus more on the funky, unique style of the children.  Try picking a few colors and sticking to them for the entire family.  Dark jeans are always a good choice and you can pair it with coordinating colors.  Sometimes matching too much can look cheesy, so try to keep each person a little unique but staying within the color scheme.

And don’t forget the chapstick! Chapped lips are really hard to photograph.

TIME WELL SPENT

At some point in everyone’s day the feeling that there is never enough time always rears its little head.  Recently a much needed break from photography presented itself to me, and I jumped on the chance.  Don’t get me wrong; photography is one of my greatest loves; however, my greatest love fell ill and needed some TLC which also gave me the time needed to finish a project that was coming due.

When someone asks me what I do, my response is always, “I’m an artist.” Rarely do I say, “I’m a photographer,” mainly because I am not just a photographer.  I draw, sketch, paint, craft, and do graphic design to name a few.  One of the many things I like to do as an artist is write.  I don’t write poems or short stories.  I truly love the art of handwriting.  So when my best friend asked if I would be willing to address the envelopes for her upcoming wedding, I naturally said, “Yes!”

So the time away from photography was well spent by taking care of my ill kiddo and helping my best friend prepare for her wedding.

CREATE BEAUTIFUL GALLERY WALLS

As a photographer I am often asked by my clients for recommendations on how to display their new family photographs.  One of my favorite recommendations is a family gallery wall.  There are many different ways to display your family photographs on a gallery wall.

Family Tree Gallery Wall

Here’s an example of a beautiful family tree gallery wall by Shannah Lane.  I originally found this image on Pinterest, but through further research found Shannah on Flickr.

Go Horizontal

If your style is more linear, try this great idea from Martha Stewart’s DIY Decorating.

Express Yourself

Use words that describe feelings about your family to make your gallery wall even more personalized.

HIT THE BEACH

Spring is coming! It’s time to take advantage of the warming weather by hitting the beach . . . for a photo shoot! As you plan your wardrobe for your shoot, keep these tips in mind:

  • Comfy Cozy.  Pairing a plain long sleeve t-shirt with a pair of rolled up blue jeans is the perfect match for a comfortable and relaxed look.

  • Red, White and Blue.   For that classic, fresh off the sailboat look, pair up navy blue and white stripes with white shorts or capris and red tennis shoes.

  • Neutral Glam.  Beige and white are a great pair for the beach.  Add a little sparkle with sequins for elegance and sophistication.  Finish off this look with a wide brim sun hat and wedge sandals.
