Wondering how to dress your family for your next portrait session? Follow these helpful tips and allow your family’s personality to shine!
I recommend wearing bold and solid colors with a lot of texture to show off personality. This is an opportunity for your style to shine. For children, bright colors are always best. I also recommend wearing layers as much as possible to add interest and texture. For example, clothing with texture such as chunky sweaters, clothing with ruffles, buttons, ribbon, embroidery, etc.
It can be difficult to coordinate colors and not look too matchy. And you don’t have to fall back on the easy combinations of black, white or khaki — don’t be afraid to think outside of the box. Choose something that matches their personalities: modern and funky, colorful and fun, conservative and classic. Don’t be afraid of color or pattern. I recommend choosing one item of clothing that is full of color and pattern and have the other items coordinate with it. But do try to avoid logos or cartoon characters. And don’t forget to coordinate shoes! Yes, their feet will be in the photograph.
Choose a style you like and a few colors you like as well. I recommend having the parents dress fashionable, yet simple and focus more on the funky, unique style of the children. Try picking a few colors and sticking to them for the entire family. Dark jeans are always a good choice and you can pair it with coordinating colors. Sometimes matching too much can look cheesy, so try to keep each person a little unique but staying within the color scheme.
And don’t forget the chapstick! Chapped lips are really hard to photograph.
